Allyson Felix works out for 5 HOURS PER DAY EVERY DAY. She can deadlift more than 250 lbs and power clean 150 lbs. Please tell me again how lifting a 10 lb weight for 30 minutes is going to make you/me/ladies bulky, please.

For anyone out there (ahem, Kimi) who may be looking for an amazing ice pack, try this one. (Target & Walmart both sell it.) It stays super cold for a long time, letting the problem area numb properly. It also molds to your contours (oh baby, baby) and stays put (even when shuffling around the house for beer & snacks post-run). My aunt who had back surgery introduced it to me and I can’t thank her enough — it’s a knee-saver!
ThermiPaq Medium Multi-Use Wrap Hot and Cold

Soft, washable cloth cover
Pliable ThermiPaq pad filled with all-natural, clay-based materials. It is non-toxic, biodegradable and environmentally safe.
Velcro® strap

Post-race blues.

It wasn’t even my race. I was just crewing/cheering for my two lovely friends: Kate & Marisa. But I’m still in post-really-exciting-event mode today. Trying to think of a good pick-me-up to get me through to 6:30 yoga tonight. (Running 9 miles on your “off” day means yoga instead of training tonight!)

Training versus Life

I’m not sure if this happens to anyone else, but sometimes when I’m training I get so focused on executing my training plan that other things seem to fade to the background. Sometimes this fixation on training causes the background to blur into a noisy dull roar for me. This cacophony starts to get to me after awhile, draining me mentally.

So yesterday I addressed it head on. I power walked 2 miles in the morning with my mom and spent the remainder of the day dealing with non-running life things, namely deep cleaning my closet. I’ve got a list of other to dos to address this week — mostly all cleaning related as a clean environment helps me think better and keeps me calmer — so I’m accepting that I might not hit 100% of my training miles. But I know that this mental burnout I’m feeling will go away if I take a few days now to focus on my non-running life. And next week I’ll be ready to tackle all the miles again with a clearer conscience, a cleaner house, and a happier & more energized disposition.

Stretching out your soleus (in addition to your gastronemicus) after you start warming up on your run makes a world of difference*.
(*etc. caveats, I am not an expert. This is what works for me.)

Ladder sprints (as I decided to call them) on the treadmill for the last 2 miles (idea courtesy of Oxygen Magazine that I was scanning on the bus today). Got 4 in today since I know tomorrow will be tighter — planning ahead! — and ended my workout by hitting my one rep max goal of 60lb for a hang clean & press. Next stop: 70lb.

1 step forward, 2 steps back

I was so excited Monday to get a head start on my running this week and to have caught up the lost 1.5 miles from my shortened long run. I was saying to myself, woo yeah! You’re gonna own that 100% of miles this month. And then, bam, destroyed by illness.

Today I am again not running as I am still weak & dehydrated from yesterday. I knew the end of this week would be tricky to fit runs into, which is why I got a head start, and now I’m behind. I am frustrated. But I will run and lift tomorrow. I will make the time.

In other news, back down to 191.2 after my spike up to 194 from the weekend’s indulgences. Well, at least the food poisoning was good for something, eh?
