Motivation Monday: Tackling new trails, even if it means wiping out on your face.
Motivation Monday: “don’t complain and work hard.”

BAMF if I ever saw one.
Yesterday morning, I emailed my friend T and told her we were going to run. And so as not to make it intimidating, I sent the C25k link to her and told her, this is our plan. After I got back from 2 hours in the car & a 5 hour meeting, I thought about bailing. But T told me that another friend wanted to come with us! I couldn’t bail on them both. So last night, I did C25k Week 1, Day 1 with T&T. It was motivating for me to get out there and coach people. I can’t wait to see the progress they make! T&T are also coming to a beginner yoga class with me at a new studio on Wednesday. Pay it forward, kids, pay it forward.
And in other exciting news, I had a series of serious conversations with the boy about weight, exercise, etc. He stills feels burned out from high school althetics and I begged for him to tell me how I could help. Well, he just called to say that he’s going to start going to the gym with his bff! His bff will push him and motivate him in ways that I, as his lady friend, cannot. Plus bff was an athlete in high school (and college), so he “gets it.”
Spread the healthy habits! Pay it forward!
REAL PEOPLE ROCK: the kate in boston edition!I’ve been following this rockstar runner’s Boston runs for quite a while! I love seeing a city through the eyes of a runner. Because sometimes your feet take you somewhere you’d never see otherwise! So impressed by her Boston run and her amazing charity fundraising. Plus I couldn’t agree more with her thoughts on walking during a run — keep moving forward, any way any how, I say! Keep up the amazing work and good luck in Boston 2012! We’ll be following and cheering you on![…]7. What motivates you? Initially, a fear of failure - I signed up for a half marathon, then a marathon because I knew I needed a reason to stick to a training program. Once I was in marathon training, busy fundraising for the Boston Debate League at the same time, it was the kids who benefit so much from the BDL’s programming that were motivating; when it was snowy and icy and dark and I wanted to skip a team run to stay in bed, I had an external motivation in those kids. Now, some combination of both of those things, peer pressure (I’ve now hooked friends on running) and knowing, especially post-injury, that I feel better and function better when I’m active. Blogging helps with this last motivator - I can easily look back and recall how I was feeling at every stage of a training cycle, and during my hiatus this fall.[…]REAL PEOPLE ROCK is a series all about featuring hardworking, real life people like you and me who are out there every day giving life their best shot. And to me, that is inspiration at its finest.

My friends are awesome & Internet-famous!
Ever see someone running so fast they appear not to be touching the ground? Well… all eight of these runners have both feet off. Incredible.

Just, wow.
MOTIVATION: being RACE READY!
If you’re like many of my dear friends and me, you’re staring down the barrel of a RACE DAY approaching. I’m sure you pros are already well prepared with your game faces on, but below are some helpful notes just to think about via the lululemon blog. This was written for marathoners, but the notes really apply to any and all kinds of races and upcoming challenges.
MOTIVATION: GETTING RACE READY!!
Surfs up, what are you waiting for?
Man I swear to god this summer is the summer I learn how to surf.
Instead of moping, I’m trying to remember the best parts of vacation and hold on to those feelings. Can’t wait to post my real pictures later this week, but here’s a little preview of what’s to come. My body is still tired from all the fun activities.
I am a person who needs a reason, who needs to know the logic behind a choice. Ask of my friends, my parents, and my fiance (!!) and they’ll confirm that my favorite question is. “Why?”
Without knowing the why, I have a really hard time motivating myself to do any of the “should”s in my life. (Example 1: the 4 to-dos from my doctor appt in January that I still have not done. Uh, oops! But I did immediately get the breast ultrasound done. She gave me a good answer to the why on that one.)
So, I should run. I should life. I should eat healthy. But lately I’ve been letting other things in life get in the way (movies, naps, convenience of just grabbing something while I’m out, celebratory alcohol). And none of these are bad on their own. But as a trend, I can feel how out of sorts I am. (Example 2: stupid fight with the boy last night into this morning.)
Tonight I will run. Why? Because I need to. Because even though my brain thinks its tired now, it’s just trying to settle into a slump and it will thank me after my body takes it for a trail run. I also know that consistent exercise will make me want to eat healthy food consistently — for more energy and less tummy aches. And that will make me want to exercise more.
The why is also why I decided, almost on a whim, to sign up for a fall marathon. Without having a big race to look forward to I can see myself sliding down the slippery “Oh well, I’ll just run tomorrow… maybe” slope.
I’m choosing the virtuous circle instead of the vicious circle. Water, fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, and apologies so far this morning.
Haven’t run in 9 days. Probably won’t run tonight as I continue to unpack, get food, yoga in the rain. But I signed up on Meetup for a local trail running group in hopes to add some variety and fun to my running/training. A group will also help motivate me to stay with it as I determine my next long-term goal.
yeaaa buddy

It doesn’t bother me
Me on Saturday for 12 miles. And me again tonight at softball. Despite deranged dreams about high school mean girls and softball, I’m am excited for our game.
Today may be Marathon Monday up here in Boston, but on Saturday my mom ran her own version of a marathon. She ran her first 5k!! She decided a few months ago that she wanted to run one before she turned 50 (in June).
Her: “I think I could do it in 45 minutes…”
Me: “Mom, I’ve seen you power walk faster than that! You can do it in… 40 minutes.”
Her: “No way! That’s fast… but I’ll try.”
I paced her on Saturday, but let her set the pace. I just tried to keep the momentum and provide moral support. As we got a mile or so in I realized we were off her planned pace a bit but I didn’t want to say anything…
Our finish time? 34:16!!! She’s a champ.

Motivation Monday
Heather Dorniden of the University of Minnesota races the 600m at the Big 10 Indoor Track Championships. She reminds what a race really is about. What life is really about. We will fall. We can rise.
