Motivation Monday: “don’t complain and work hard.”
Brandon Adam — retired US military, Iraq War veteran, lost his legs to an IED in 2007. Competes in mono-ski at Winter X-Games. (Side note: watching mono-ski was significantly more OMG! nerve wracking than any other WXG event.)
BAMF if I ever saw one.
REAL PEOPLE ROCK: the kate in boston edition!I’ve been following this rockstar runner’s Boston runs for quite a while! I love seeing a city through the eyes of a runner. Because sometimes your feet take you somewhere you’d never see otherwise! So impressed by her Boston run and her amazing charity fundraising. Plus I couldn’t agree more with her thoughts on walking during a run — keep moving forward, any way any how, I say! Keep up the amazing work and good luck in Boston 2012! We’ll be following and cheering you on![…]7. What motivates you? Initially, a fear of failure - I signed up for a half marathon, then a marathon because I knew I needed a reason to stick to a training program. Once I was in marathon training, busy fundraising for the Boston Debate League at the same time, it was the kids who benefit so much from the BDL’s programming that were motivating; when it was snowy and icy and dark and I wanted to skip a team run to stay in bed, I had an external motivation in those kids. Now, some combination of both of those things, peer pressure (I’ve now hooked friends on running) and knowing, especially post-injury, that I feel better and function better when I’m active. Blogging helps with this last motivator - I can easily look back and recall how I was feeling at every stage of a training cycle, and during my hiatus this fall.[…]REAL PEOPLE ROCK is a series all about featuring hardworking, real life people like you and me who are out there every day giving life their best shot. And to me, that is inspiration at its finest.

My friends are awesome & Internet-famous!
Alex Honnold - free solo climber on 60 Minutes right now. Holy shit.
Chillin’ with Dean Karnazes at the VIP pre-event (thanks, Kate!). Nothing mind blowing in his talk, still inspirational. But I do feel more invigorated and less terrified of my 20 miles in 3 days (if you see me trying to eat a Hawaiian pizza rolled up while running, blame him).
Will you all stop posting your awesome Iron(wo)man 70.3, 140.6, etc. triathalon recaps? I’m really tempted to go buy a bike and I cannot afford it yet!
Stop being so damn inspiring and making me want to tackle more crazy challenges.
On a related note, anyone want to buy me a bike for next spring?
To everyone who’s out there killing it today (and days to come): You are an inspiration. If it was’t for you guys, I wouldn’t be training for a marathon this year. I would never have tried running a half marathon. So know that as you push your limits, you contiue to challenge the rest of us to push ours — a first 5k, a first half, a first 20 miler before a marathon… Thank you!
i wish i liked running as much as i like your face, mister
I know it’s straight up New Balance/minimalist promo, but I’m getting antsy and I can get behind the sentiment.
Sorry, but, not sorry. Enjoy.
Reminds me of Chris. Best quote: “A huge part of running a 100-miler is just not giving up. Because everything hurts after 60 or 70 miles. But that’s why you run 100 miles, anyone can go out and run 50 miles or a 100k.”
You know when you get a song stuck in your head and then you just have to listen to it? That was this morning. And now I’ve got this jammin’ mix going on Grooveshark. I need to check my iTunes at home and see which of these songs I don’t have yet and then buy them and put them on my iPod for running ASAP.
- Young Lovers by Love Grenades
- The Queen by Gym Class Heroes
- Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off by Panic! at the Disco
- Crazy Game of Poker by OAR
- Ghostwriter by RJD2
- Work It Out by Jurassic 5
If you aren’t familiar with any of these and you’re in the mood for a pick-me-up jam this morning, definitely check them out. (Grooveshark.com then search for the title)
File under: people who continue to blow your mind with their amazingness. Also, INSPIRATION.
Last year I mentioned my friend Chris who was recovering from finding a giant grapefruit-sized ball of cancer in his lungs.
In February 2010 he was undergoing chemo and surgery and all those nasty, cancer-destroying things. And now 18 months later, he’s part of a crazy-ass racing team running ultras in the woods.
I can’t say enough about how much this kid’s ideas, energy, and adventurous spirit impacted me growing up.
Edit: Turns out he has a blog all about his adventures. Definitely worth checking out.

Point, Counter Point: Strong Women Being Strong (and Badass, Talented, Amazing, Skilled Athletes). Weak bodies can’t do half this shit.
*Not intended as an all inclusive collage of what is strong or athletic or a “good” body. Only intended to provide a small sample of counter images to this video.
“Tumblr Tuesday” is no longer a thing (thankfully), but if you’re like, “Hey, my dash isn’t filled with enough awesomeness” and want to follow someone new, I highly recommend the one & only Ms. KimiJoy. She’s sweet, funny, and has taken her life to new level of badassery by jumping out of a “perfectly good plane” (I am jealous! This is still on my 30by30 bucket list).
Time for some Marilyn… Stunning!
I’m this this is the shape my body might be when I get where I want to maintain. I would not be disappointed in this at all.
There’s really nothing so basically transformative, nothing so regenerative, as getting in shape. Some of it is simple blood sugar, blood pressure, metabolism and endorphins. When you’re healthy, you feel better. Your high-school PE teacher could have told you that. But it’s also the sense that if you can change your body, you can change anything. You feel your muscles working beneath your clothes, you become aware of your heartbeat and you remember that you’re an animal first and animals do not like to be fenced in.
The fact is, we’re going to be dead someday, and I don’t care how important we are or how much money we make, how refined our taste is in wine, music, clothes, literature, art, women. Those things are great, but there’s no escaping that your life begins and ends in your own body.
