The Gym, The Studio, or The Wild?

So, wonderful Tumblr fitness, health & all around badass athlete community, I need your thoughts & opinions.

The Wild: I like to run outside. I like using my feet to explore streets and trails, both close to home and unfamiliar. This is a fitness environment I will never give up. I got healthy so I could explore the wild.

The Studio: I really like the new yoga studio I’ve been going to. I have one more class on my 5-class trial pass. After that, classes at $10 ea (in 10-packs). I want to make practice a regular part of my routine, so that’s about $40-$80/month.

The Gym: I used to have a gym membership. It was fancy & it worked at the time - $60/month. But I stopped using it when I got serious about training last spring and I canceled in the summer. This winter hasn’t been as brutal, so I don’t need the gym for the treadmills, but I would like to (and know I should) start lifting heavy things. Our apartment as is cannot handle a home gym weight set (though it’s on the next apt must-have list). So, I’ve been thinking about finding a new gym. There’s a PF right across the street from work & one about 2.5 miles from home. Membership would be $20/month for “Black Card” pass (12 mo commitment) — so I could use it at work AND at home, plus have guest privileges. I’m not sure if I want to be in a gym contract again, but maybe I should?

tl;dr: Do I just man up and sign up for the gym and stop worrying about the cost?

  3. catinto said: Does your yoga studio have a work exchange program? If you’ve got the time for it, maybe it’s something to consider! As for gym vs the outdoors, i’d stick to the latter. Free is always better!
  4. runslikeapenguin answered: I enjoy having a gym where I can lift heavy, especially since I’m renting too (& possibly moving soon) so a home gym is not possible.
  5. houseofspectres answered: I live in Florida, so a gym is a necessity except in winter. You can use with free weights at home, but if you need an indoor treadmill, GYM!
  6. hayruns answered: I don’t like not having the option to crosstrain in a gym on non-running days, or if it’s just absolutely nasty out. I’d vote for the gym.
